As you may already be aware, many lawn mowing injuries happen each year. After all, you are dealing with a sharp blade traveling at incredibly high speeds; approximately 200 miles per hour. Emergency rooms end up seeing one mowing injury after another, to the point that one Kansas City physician, Dr. Dale Jarka, felt the need to urge all lawn mower users to observe mower safety rules. Fortunately, taking a few precautions goes a long way. How do these injuries happen and what can you do to prevent them?
Children at Higher Risk for Mowing Injuries – Every year, roughly 17,000 kids suffer injuries due to accidents on or around lawn mowers. Some of these accidents stem from a child sitting on the lap of a lawn mower driver. Some of them are simply from projectile being shot out of a mower blade. In order to ensure the safety of children, never put a child on your lap while on a riding lawn mower, make sure children aren’t playing in your vicinity while mowing and clear out rocks or debris from your lawn before mowing.
A Hot Mower is a Fire Hazard – An ABC report stated that engine exhausts on lawn mowers can reach up to 240 degrees. This makes them a potential fire hazard if immediately stored in a closed area with gasoline nearby. Let your mower cool before storing it or refilling the tank with gas.
Dangers for the Mower Operator – All told, approximately 80,000 lawn mower related injuries are reported every year. Projectile, mowing on wet grass and mowing on steep hills are common reasons that these injuries occur. Experts suggest that users wear proper lawn mowing apparel every time they mow. This includes wearing jeans or thick pants, boots and protective eyewear. Never wear flip-flops while mowing your yard, a common mistake that leads to multiple emergency room visits.
Always wear appropriate attire, let your mowers cool off before storing them and never let children ride with you on a lawn mower. Thankfully, these tips along with safety awareness can keep you and everyone around you safe. Making sure your equipment is well maintained and high quality also helps.
