Kohler has been making great mower engines for a long time. But this isn’t the limit of the companies range or history. With a history stretching all the way back to 1873, the Kohler brand expanded in all directions over the next century-and-a-half. Kohler companies make all sorts of things, probably some items that you have in your home right now. Its subsidiaries make bathtubs, refrigerators, tile, cabinetry, you name it.
But it’s the Kohler Power Group that’s responsible for handcrafting its famous mower engines. This craft is possibly closest to the heart of the company’s founding purpose, which was to simplify and make more efficient pre-modern farming techniques. The Kohler founders could never have anticipated the technology their company would one day innovate, but those days are here today in the range of Kohler household and commercial lawn mower engines.
There are many anecdotal recommendations reported by longtime Kohler engine users. A benefit often mentioned is longevity and wear. Kohler engines are good for long periods of use. They won’t get too hot even with prolonged exposure to the sun. Components don’t start to melt, as is often seen in competitors’ machines. Many users report eight to ten years of use out of their Kohler engines, or more. Commercial Kohler engines use superior bearings, hydraulic lifters, oil coolers, and other components necessary for dedicated lawn and garden companies.
Kohler engines are also well-constructed. The main Kohler engine assembly is in Wisconsin, in a sprawling 460,000 square foot facility. Most of its commercial and high-end residential lawn service mower engines are assembled by hand at this site. Industry analysts report very high assembly line standards for Kohler and their subsidiaries, which results in longer lasting, higher quality engines down the line.
Commercial mower sales are driven by many factors. Landscaping of lawns and natural spaces due to housing and recreation are enormous driving forces. When considering these as a part of the growing US economy, economists estimate that the lawn services industry will expand by four percent annually for at least the next two years. In that time, Kohler will produce a lot more mower engines, all while following increasingly stringent industry emissions regulations. But Kohler is up to the task, boasting industry leading specs and lots of loyalty from thousands of hard-won customers.
